Mr. James Baker Obituary

On April 17th, 2024, at the age of 87, James Thomas Baker passed away at his cherished home. James, a devoted son, brother, father, and proud veteran of the United States Air Force touched the lives of many with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family and passions.

Born in Townsend, Georgia and raised in Dorchester, currently known as Midway, Georgia, James was the only son among the 6 children born to Johnathan Baker of Liberty County and Elvina Bowens of McIntosh County. Surviving sisters include Elizabeth Horn, Ethel Baker, Leatha Singleton, and Caroline Bacon, while Anne Lee Johnson and Viola Shirley Baker Ivy preceded him in death.

James attended elementary school in Liberty County, where he later graduated from Liberty County High School. He cultivated lifelong friendships and was an active member of the Liberty County High School Alumni Committee. Following his education, James enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served from 1955 to 1959. Following his time in the Air Force, he owned and operated an electronic store in Miami, Florida. James continued his leadership by dedicating his time to US Borax in Boron, CA for 22 years and retired as Control Room Chief.

During his retirement years, James found purpose and fulfillment in giving back to his community. He volunteered his time and talents at the historic Dorchester Academy, leaving an unforgettable mark on the institution and its visitors, resulting in him being awarded as an NAACP Unsung Hero on March 2, 2020. Additionally, James was part of the Anointed Voices Choir and Men of Integrity Choir at First Calvary Baptist Church in Hinesville, Georgia. His involvement extended to the Liberty County District Choir, where he shared his love for music with a wider audience.

James found joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly his love for collecting clocks and a variety of other items. His days were often spent outside, tending to his garden of trees and flowers, with roses holding a special place in his heart.

James will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. His memory will live on in the
hearts of those he touched, and his legacy of love and hard work will continue to inspire us all.
Rest in peace, James, knowing that you were loved beyond measure and that your legacy will
live on in the hearts of your family and friends.
